'Til I Join You

The autumn air held a sharp chill that traced a finger of ice down the spine. The sky was fittingly a drab shade of gray despite the fact that it was only mid afternoon. The clouds shed their dreariness on the world as they hung, with the ominous threat of rain, pregnant in the sky. A lone woman strode slowly in silence, a single long stem rose held in her hand, her eyes downcast behind her long blonde bangs. She traveled a path she knew well, and her footfalls eventually led her to her destination. She knelt in the thick, vibrantly green grass, her hands resting lightly on her knees as she looked at a spot in front of her with a sad resignation flitting across her regal features. She was alone with her task, but had someone looked at her at that very moment, they'd have wondered at the sudden tranquil look that gently painted her features. A slow smile captured her lips, hauntingly beautiful in its message of melancholy and deep, soul wrenching adoration. Reaching out with one elegant hand, she traced the mottled white surface of the marble stone in front of her. A lone tear escaped her achingly clear blue eyes as her delicately tapered finger moved from the capital L to trace the following letters gently. Her mind flashed back to a day one year and a handful of days past as she moved over the chilled surface of the stone.

"Mrs. Reynolds, if I could speak to you privately please?" A tall doctor in a crisp white lab coat called to her. She released and then patted her lover's hand softly, then rose, pressing her lips gently to her pale forehead. She turned and followed the doctor to the hall outside the room, her blue eyes searching his face for some sign that he carried good news. He met her beseeching look with one of pained sympathy.

"I'm sorry Mrs. Reynolds, the latest tests have come back and I'm afraid I can't give you any good news. I'll not mince words here, the cancer is back and has spread." His brown eyes were full of regret and genuine sadness.

"How long," Amy's words were thick with unshed tears. She refused to be weak; Lucy needed her to be strong.

The doctor sighed deeply, wishing he could give her better news. "Days, maybe a week. The cancer's spread to her lungs and brain."

Amy's eyes moved from the doctor's face to the window through which she could see her love, lying peacefully against the hospital bed. Scud had moved to take her place at Lucy's side, and was stroking his best friend's hand gently. Shaking her head to clear the tears that threatened to fall she turned back to the doctor.

"And there's nothing that can be done? You're well aware money's no object here. There's no specialist you can call in or a new drug cocktail you can try?" For a moment her resolve broke and she looked at the doctor, her eyes pleading with him to help her, to save her lover by any means he could find.

"Mrs. Reynolds, I wish I could tell you there was something we could do. At this point even chemotherapy and radiation would do no good. It's simply too far advanced." Amy's head shook once as she started to argue the doctor's words, then she sighed deeply.

The doctor took her hands in his own and squeezed gently. Amy met his eyes and smiled weakly. She knew there was nothing he wouldn't try if it meant he could help Lucy, there was honestly nothing left to try.

"Thank you Dr. Vance. If there's nothing left I'd like to get back to her," Amy's voice threatened to break.

"Of course Mrs. Reynolds. I'm so very sorry." She squeezed his hands in thanks and turned to the door to her lover's room. Her left hand grasped the handle and for a moment she just stared at the beautiful platinum and diamond band that graced her ring finger. Inhaling deeply she steeled herself and then entered the room. Scud rose, his eyes searching Amy's face for some news. Reading her face as the years of friendship they'd shared allowed him to do, he nodded his head once and reached to take her into his arms. She allowed herself to be folded gently in his strong arms and rested her forehead against his chest. Together they stood, their grief taking hold of them for a moment. Breaking the embrace, she stepped back and wiped the errant tear that had broken past her steel resolve.

"You should call Janet. She'll want to see her. Tell her to bring Lucia with her," she took a deep, shaking breath, "This will be the last time she'll get to see her godmother."

Scud nodded again, the tears he'd been fighting running unchecked down his cheeks. He left the room quietly and Amy settled back into the chair at her wife's side.

Lucy stirred as she felt her love take her hand. Her chocolate brown eyes met Amy's azure and she smiled weakly. Amy raised their entwined hands to her lips and gently kissed Lucy's knuckles, smiling as her lips brushed against the mate to the band on her own left hand. Lucy searched her soul mate's face, patiently waiting for Amy to speak.

"T-t-the doctor was here a bit ago Meu Amor. The news, it's not good." Amy struggled against the tears that were fighting for release. "A week at most." She spoke the last words softly.

Lucy sighed with resignation. She'd known deep down this trip to the hospital would be her last. She released Amy's hand and raised her own to Amy's cheek. Amy leaned into the caress, finally giving way to the tide she had been holding back. She rested her head on Lucy's thigh and let go, knowing she was safe in this small space they shared. Lucy's hand moved to Amy's tresses, soothing her gently. She stroked her lover's hair until she felt the wracking sobs subside slightly, then raised Amy's head to look at her.

"My love, please don't be sad. We've had seventeen years of love and happiness together. Every single day I've spent by your side has been a blessing. When I go I will be leaving this world knowing what it feels like to have been loved completely. That's something that not everyone can say. I have no regrets. I have known true happiness." Lucy spoke slowly as she looked deep into Amy's watery eyes. Her thumb stroked Amy's cheek as she leaned against her hand. "Promise me, Amy. Promise me you will not mourn me when I'm gone. I don't want you to mourn my loss baby; I want you to celebrate what we had instead."

Amy stood and gently pressed her lips to her lover's. They shared gentle but passionate kisses, expressing their devotion to each other.

Amy's face held a gentle smile. She raised the perfect crimson bud she'd brought with her to her lips, kissing the silken petals softly before laying it on the slight ledge of the tombstone. Touching its shining surface once more, she rose. She caressed the name across the front of the stone again, and then turned away, standing for a moment as if unwilling to leave. She turned to the tombstone one last time, a smile across her face as she spoke.

"Til I join you Meu Amor, hold me in your heart."

End.
