Sand Castles, Diamonds and Lions in the Sky

Blue eyes squinted in concentration as the dainty blonde girl patted the sand under her hands and shaped it into an amazingly good rendition of a castle. She smiled and giggled to herself, completely enraptured and ensconced in her own little world as she sculpted a castle befitting a royal princess. Satisfied with her turrets and towers she set to digging the moat, and was so wrapped up in settling the bit of bark she'd found in place as a drawbridge she failed to hear the equine-esque galloping of many small feet growing nearer. She glanced up, her eyes growing large as they bore down upon her, a whole group of them playing at soldiers. A tall blonde boy wielding a large stick proclaimed loudly that he would be the champion of this duel as he thundered backwards with no regard to the small blonde building her enchanted castle behind him. His foot swept against her castle as he bulldozed past her, returning her hard work and dedication to so many grains of sand. Her big blue eyes teared up as she watched the boy and his group continue on as if they'd not even noticed her. Crying in earnest now, she drew her knees to her chin and covered her eyes with her little hands. Sobbing quietly at the corner of the sandbox she jumped in shock when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Grinding her tiny fists into her tear swollen eyes she looked up…and into sparkling chocolate eyes. A small, tanned face was smiling down at her, eyes portraying sympathy and apology as she grasped the blonde's hands and pulled her up out of the sand.

The small blonde bit her lower lip as she looked at the newcomer, trying to figure out why she'd stopped to talk to her. No one ever made a point to notice her, not her parents, not her teachers, not the kids at school, and certainly not a stranger in the park. She'd grown used to feeling invisible and now that she was suddenly the object of someone's interest she didn't quite know how to react.

"Are you ok?" The little girl asked her, pushing her long black bangs out of her dark chocolate eyes as she searched the blonde girl's face. "Scud didn't mean ta mess yer castle up, he's just a big butthead when he's playin."

The blonde glanced at her castle again and her lower lip started to tremble as she thought of the hard work she'd done to make it perfect. She dragged her gaze away slowly and looked at her toes as she felt tears prick her eyelids again.

"Oh no, don't cry!" The brunette glared over at the group of boys she'd been playing with as she moved to put her arm around the blonde girl's petite shoulders. The blonde girl tensed up when she felt the other girl's arm move around her shoulder, but let herself be pulled into a warm hug. She felt her tears subsiding as the tanned arms around her hugged her tight. Pulling away slightly she looked up through her wispy golden bangs at the darker girl.

"S-s-sorry, I didn't mean ta be a sissy," she stammered slowly, not used to talking to people. "It's ok, your friend didn't mean to ruin it. I shouldn'ta been in the way." The dark haired girl looked at her quizzically as she stammered her apology out.

"It's not YOUR fault silly! You were jus' playin in the sand. It was our fault cuz no one was watchin where we were goin'!" She said, then took the blonde's hand and lead her back to the sandbox.

"C'mon, we'll fix your castle…" she paused, realizing she didn't know the blonde girl's name. "What's yer name anyway? Mine's Lucinda, but don' call me that. You can call me Lucy." She smiled as she introduced herself.

"I'm Amy." The blonde extended her hand in an overly grown up gesture and shook Lucy's own tanned hand, making the little brunette giggle.

"Well c'mon Amy; let's make your castle again!" The brunette's eyes sparkled with excitement as she settled down into the sand.

The two girls chatted animatedly as they set to work making the sand castle whole again. Soon, their task was completed and they moved from the sandbox to the jungle gym. They chased one another and fell to the ground laughing, then hopped up and did it again. Running without a care, they made the whole playground their own until, tired, they both flopped down at the edge of the woods that lined the park. Amy laid back in the grass, looking at the clouds as Lucy sat next to her, watching the blonde's face as she gazed upwards.

"Whatcha lookin at Amy?" She asked, squinting at the clouds.

"I'm lookin at the shapes in the clouds," the slight girl explained. "See? There's a mushroom, and there's a heart, and there's a puppy!"

Lucy laid next to her and scrunched her tanned little face up as she tried to see what Amy saw. Her eyebrows shot up in amazement as she began to see the shapes herself.

"OH, I see it now!" She exclaimed excitedly, pointing her somewhat grubby index finger at the clouds. "There's a lion, and there's a frog too!" Lucy looked at Amy with adoration in her dark eyes. "I never thought that clouds were anythin' but clouds before, this is cool!" Lucy grinned and Amy thought that her smile made the whole world look brighter.

Suddenly Lucy grabbed Amy's hand and looked her full in the face. "You're the coolest person I've ever met!" She exclaimed. "Can we be friends forever?" The dark eyes were completely open and earnest as they met blue. Amy's head ducked a bit as her face colored. She wasn't used to people even noticing her, much less someone giving her this kind of attention. She looked up, biting her lower lip as she met Lucy's eyes. "I-I'd like that a lot," she admitted, her little face flushing even further. Lucy smiled gently at the red faced blonde, then scowled as she heard her name shouted. Looking one more time at the blonde's still pink face, she hesitated a moment, biting her own lip as if she were trying to make a big decision. Suddenly, her mind made up, she leaned closer to the blonde and kissed her pink cheek softly. Amy's eyes shot open as she stared at the dark haired girl in amazement, but all she got was another of those world brightening grins as Lucy hopped up and turned to leave. She turned one last time, shouting a hurried "I'll see ya later Amy!" as she ran towards the adult calling her name.

Amy's little hand rose to her cheek where Lucy had kissed her, and rested there as she watched the dark haired girl and the group of boys scramble into the large black SUV. She waved as the truck pulled away, smiling as she walked slowly towards the castle they'd rebuilt together. She knelt next to it, brushing her finger softly against the drawbridge and then very gently traced the little diamond drawn over the castle's door.

Part 2

The slight blonde girl's eyes scanned the area around her, constantly moving and searching. Suddenly her line of vision changed and she was staring up into the clear blue sky. Sitting up quickly and rubbing her side, she glared at the dark skinned girl looking at her mischievously and giggling.

"MAX," she glared at her friend as she spoke. "That HURT!"

"Hmmph, s'not my fault you weren't watching. We're playing tag, not the stare at nothing game!" Max Brewer stood up and brushed her athletic young body off. "'Sides, what were ya lookin at anyway?"

Amy glanced up and took the offered hand a willowy little Asian girl was offering her. Raising to her feet she smiled shyly at her friend. "Thanks Dom'nique."

"You are welcome," the girl spoke with a heavy French accent. "You should maybe watch what ees coming at you next time, no?"

Amy smiled and nodded her head in response, her eyes already scanning the playground again. Max rolled her eyes at her friend, then grabbed Dominique's thin arm. "Come on, there's Janet," she said excitedly. "Maybe SHE'LL play tag with us." The last was said with a pointed look thrown Amy's way. Amy just rolled her eyes at Max in response, and made her way to a bench where she took out her sketch pad. Watching her friends running in the yard, she moved her pencil across the creamy white paper in front of her. Soon surprisingly detailed renditions of her friends appeared. So enraptured by her work was she, that she didn't hear the light footfalls walk up behind her. When small hands wrapped themselves around her eyes and her vision was cut off she yelped in surprise.

"Guess who!" Lucy spoke when she heard her friend yelp. She removed her hands from Amy's eyes and moved around the bench to sit next to her. Their eyes met and Lucy grinned at Amy before snatching her sketch pad out of her hands. "What's this?" The little brunette asked.

Amy took the book back into her own hands and shyly glanced at Lucy as she opened it to the first page. They flipped through the pencil decorated pages for a while until Amy opened to another page towards the back. Lucy's eyes widened and sparkled with excitement as she saw her own face looking back at her.

"You drew me?" Her voice was full of awe as she ran her fingers over the childish - but still well done - rendition of herself. "How come you drew me?"

Amy's poor little face was bright red at this point, and she peeked shyly through her hair at the brown eyes looking at her in wait of an answer. Lucy was smiling, her head cocked to the side in curiosity and she looked so adorable that Amy grinned back at her.

"Cuz, you're pretty," she explained slowly. "An cuz I dreamed about you."

Lucy's face lit up with a smile and she leaned close to Amy and for the second time she moved to kiss Amy's blushing cheek.

"She was goin to KISS you Amy!" The girls both jumped out of their skins at the shrill voice in front of them. "An you were gonna LET her!"

Amy rolled her eyes at the blonde girl in front of them. "Lucy, this is my friend Janet," she introduced the two. "Janet, this is my Lucy! She's the one who helped me make my sand castle again."

Janet's blue eyes narrowed as she scrutinized the dark haired girl. Lucy almost cringed at the inspection she was receiving when, as suddenly as it had started, it ended. Janet's eyes sparkled as she moved to touch Lucy's arm. "I like your sweater," she said, smiling at Lucy.

"Thanks!" Lucy smiled back at the talkative blonde, then as she looked out at the yard in front of them she saw Scud and the other kids in her group playing tag with the two girls Janet had been playing with. Quickly kissing Amy's cheek anyway, she stood and tugged Amy to her feet.

"C'mon, lets go play tag!"

Amy allowed herself to be brought to her feet, and she and Lucy walked behind Janet out to where the other children were playing. If someone were to look that way they would have seen a coltish blonde girl and a tomboyish brunette walking slowly out to the yard, their hands intertwined. The girls weren't old enough to know it yet, but if that person were to look at them, they would be looking at fate.
